Investment Sought.
The Huichol Indians of Mexico, some 7,000, live in their homeland almost as they would have 5000 years ago. They still wear the traditional clothing, live in adobe brick homes, most go without electricity, none have running water. Their lives revolve around family, community, shamanism, and ceremony. Peyote, blue deer, corn, and the eagle are the four principle dieties of their religion. All undeniable truths. Elders gather together in a single room adobe lodge for Mitote, peyote ceremonies, working together on a spiritual level to help spirits rise to heaven as well as guide their community.
To earn extra funds they sell their folk art. This helps buy farming equipment, and other ‘modern’ necessities. They sell their chaquira jewellery; their traditional cuchuries, sash bags; and chaquira sculpture such as the Jaguar seen on #artwalk
In order to preserve the Huichol way of life and allow them to continue on their important course we are looking for investment to create quality Huichol folk art reproductions. The artisans can only produce a small quantity of art per year and although pieces are common they are not prolific. Large pieces of Huichol art are presented in museums and held by collectors. Small pieces are often sold for below value to travellers. Those interested should be able to purchase reproductions of these pieces.
Your investment will go towards the purchasing of available Huichol folk art, the reproduction of select pieces and the sale of reproductions in home decor stores, design centers and gift shops.
